Monitoring and controlling oxygen generation at a multispeciality hospital

A hospital's on-site PSA oxygen plant was consuming energy at an unknown rate per unit of oxygen produced, with pressure leakages and supply disturbances going undetected. SEnergy IoT instrumented the generator, quantified per-unit cost, and reduced the targeted electricity bill by 30%.

The challenge

  • Cost of energy per unit of oxygen generated was unknown.
  • A steep increase in overall energy usage, with no breakdown attributable to the oxygen plant.
  • Oxygen pressure and pipeline leakages remained a blind spot.
  • Root cause of supply disturbances was unidentified.
  • Consumption of oxygen itself was not quantified against generation.

Objectives

  • Measure the electrical parameters of the oxygen generator and feeding distribution board.
  • Identify distribution imbalances, consumption pattern, and leakages.
  • Alert users on threshold breaches in real time.
  • Monitor and control the quantity and pressure of oxygen supplied.
  • Reduce overall energy consumption without compromising oxygen availability.

What SEnergy IoT did

Instrumented the plant

Supplied and installed a smart oxygen flow meter and smart multi-function electrical meters on the oxygen generator's feeding DB. All meters are networked to the SEnergy Cloud.

Baselined & analysed

Analysed consumption, usage, and wastage patterns. Quantified peak and off-peak consumption. Produced periodic visual analytics and reports.

Alerted on anomalies

Configured real-time alerts for energy and power-quality metrics. Isolated and alerted on abnormalities in both the electrical supply and the oxygen flow line.

Fixed the process

Arrested leakages in delivery pipelines and valves. Redesigned the generator cut-off so there is no idle consumption when the required pressure is already stored in the tank.

Results

  • Cost of oxygen generated has been quantified — the hospital now knows the energy cost per unit of O₂.
  • Overall targeted electricity bill reduced by 30% through load management and eliminated idle run of the generator.
  • Zero recurring energy audits — the platform's analytics replaced the periodic external audit cycle.
  • Load imbalances and blind spots on the supply side were identified and corrected.
  • The customer gained the ability to manage power demand against load in a continuous feedback loop.
