Earth fault detection at a multispeciality hospital group

Frequent breaker trips. Costly medical equipment at risk. Operators endangered. A real fire-hazard threat and service disruption that was damaging patient outcomes and institutional reputation. SEnergy IoT instrumented the problem, located the imbalances, and gave the hospital a working safety net.

The challenge

  • Frequent tripping of electrical breakers; cause of the problem unknown.
  • Safety of costly medical equipment being compromised by the recurring faults.
  • Safety of operators at risk.
  • Real threat of fire hazard.
  • Service disruption causing loss of working hours and damaging the institution's goodwill.
  • Rising maintenance and spare-part spending driven by the recurring faults.

Objectives

  • Find the root cause of the tripping.
  • Identify distribution imbalances and leakages.
  • Measure and alert users about threshold breaches in real time.
  • Improve maintainability.
  • Reduce the frequency of tripping.
  • Ensure the safety of equipment and operators.

What SEnergy IoT did

Smart earth-fault meter deployment

Supplied and installed a Smart Earth Fault Meter on the problematic distribution path. Networked to the SEnergy Cloud for continuous observation.

Fault diagnostic analytics

Periodic visual analytics and reports surfaced the fault-detection and diagnostic signal. Phase imbalances were identified and located with time stamps.

Real-time alerting

Abnormalities were isolated and alerted on in real time, enabling the on-site team to act before a breaker trip disrupted service.

RAMS roadmap

Provided a roadmap to increase the equipment's RAMS score — Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety — across the critical distribution path.

Results

  • Increased safety of equipment and operators, with earth-fault conditions caught and resolved in real time.
  • Efficient operation of equipment without service disruption.
  • Effective SLA adherence restored on the critical distribution path.
  • Eliminated the need for frequent and expensive external energy audits.
  • Reduced maintenance and spare-part spending driven by the recurring faults.
